About Ruth

Ruth was born on August 9, 1923, and passed away on January 8, 2011. Between those dates, it seems as though eternity has passed. You can choose to remember her as a little girl growing up in the suburbs of Paris, France. You can choose to remember her as the young woman who was robbed of her youth and thrown into an unimaginable hell by the Nazis. You can choose to remember her as a highly creative artist who painted on silk. You can choose to remember her as a young wife and mother who would do anything for her family. Or you can remember her as a wise and crazy (in a good way) grandmother who was even crazier about her grandchildren.

Above all, we must remember that Ruth Bindefeld Neray was human.

In her own words:

I am a survivor and I always will be, but I don’t want to be only a survivor. I cannot forget and I don’t want to forget because it shaped my body and my soul. And how can I forget? But I am also a human being who went through those tragic events and came out stronger. I was determined to win and to go on with my life. There is life after Auschwitz and my children are the living proof of that.” - Ruth Bindefeld Neray
